The meeting was called to order at 10.15 a.m.

Adoption of the agenda

The agenda was adopted.

The President

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.

Members of the Council have before them document S/2008/798, which contains the text of a draft resolution prepared in the course of the Council's prior consultations. I wish to draw attention to document S/2008/799, containing a letter dated 18 December 2008 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council, transmitting a letter dated 10 December 2008 from the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. Unless I hear any objection I shall put the draft resolution to the vote now.

There being no objection it is so decided.

The President

There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 1855 (2008).

The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda.
